Forward in Faith Lincoln Photography Project

The Photo Project for Forward in Faith Lincoln included 'corporate' pages for the regional organisation and also 2-3 pages for each of the 14 FiF parishes in the diocese. This project covered the largest geographical area of any of the previous Photo Projects, posing a wide number of issues, including accessibility to all 14 churches and liaising with 4 distinct parish groups. Architectural photos were taken at all 14 churches; however only two were visited for photographs of the church services: Swinstead Church (Edenham Group) and St Nicholas' Church, Boston.

All 14 churches are High-Anglican and therefore it was essential to focus the Photo Project on the heart of the service: the Eucharist. 582 images were taken over a period of several weeks, a large number of these were eligible to be used on the 'corporate' pages of Forward in Faith Lincoln to complement the text provided by the Regional Dean. Unlike many other projects, this was perhaps the most effective at communicating the message: "This is what we do, this is who we are". The shafts of sunlight piercing through the dense smoke from the incense created beautiful images, but more importantly it allowed the images to convey succinctly the tradition of the church.

A small number of images were used from our library of images, taken at other churches, where the traditions were very similar. It is always our aim to photograph every feature and aspect of a church in the event that something may be useful in the future. For most churches we use some images only once a year: at Advent or Easter. For the FiF Lincoln website we 'borrowed' images taken for other Photo Projects that we felt lent a further dimension to the 'message' that was being conveyed through both text and image. This can sometimes be the case for images taken of a church's event or activity, especially an event that we were not available to attend. Your congregation can be a great source of images: extend an invitation for people to share their photos of church life, you may be surprised what you'll find.
